FAQs

What should I keep in mind when buying a toothbrush?

When selecting a toothbrush, the brand matters less than the type of bristles it has or the size of the head. Because medium and hard brushes can cause irritation and gum recession, we recommend choosing an extra soft toothbrush with a small or compact head. This brush will help you clean each tooth more completely and is less likely to irritate your sensitive gum tissue. For a clean, healthy smile, we recommend brushing at least twice a day and visiting our Lewisville practice every six months for routine cleanings.

How important is regular flossing?

Flossing is very important because it will help you remove food, bacteria, and plaque from parts of your teeth your toothbrush can’t reach, usually in between each of your teeth. We recommend flossing at least once a day, preferably before bedtime. In between teeth is the most common area where periodontal disease progresses rapidly.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a special restoration made from gold, porcelain, composites, or even stainless steel. If you have a severely decayed or broken tooth, your crown will repair it by covering nearly all of your tooth and protecting the root underneath. Crowns are sometimes referred to as caps.

Is there a difference between a bridge and a partial denture?

Because bridges and partial dentures are both designed to replace missing teeth, the significant difference between them is that bridges are permanent while partial dentures are removable. Many patients prefer a bridge over a partial for this very reason.

If I need a crown, will I need a root canal too?

The short answer to this question is: No. While crowns and root canals are associated with one another, not every patient who needs a crown also needs a root canal. However, for patients who have undergone a root canal, a crown is essential for returning the tooth’s normal function and appearance and assisting in preventing future fracture.
